You’re Not Too Grown to Color: Why Your Inner Child Needs You

Posted by jaha Knight on

Sis, I know you’re out here adulting and doing your thing—but let me ask you this: when was the last time you played?

Not the kind of play where you're multitasking or checking off another box on your to-do list. Not the play you do when you're playing with your kid and distracted at the same time.  I mean the kind of play where time slows down, where you’re fully immersed in joy, where you reconnect with that part of you that’s been hidden beneath the weight of responsibilities and expectations.

Well it's time you start. There is a beautiful part of you that longs for uncomplicated play.

That part of you is your inner child—that beautiful, curious, playful part of you that still remembers how to have fun without guilt, how to dream without limits, how to express without fear.

I'm Too Grown, jaha

Now, I know what you’re thinking: I’m too grown for coloring.

How did I know you'd say that? Because when I'm out in the world gracing you all with dakari Moon Black Girl Imaginarium products,  9 times out of 10, you think what I have is for kids. But it aint. It's for you. Now don't get me wrong, we have products for girls, too. We want them to grow up with the options we didn't have when we were kids and also be confident that they have representation in the world.

Now that I've said that, sis, here’s the thing, even though you think we make products for everyone butttttt you (your aunt likes puzzles, your niece likes to color, your sister enjoys crosswords) we are making these coloring books for you. Yes, you! Your inner child needs you, and coloring is one of the most powerful ways to honor her.

Coloring Is Soul Care, Not Just a Hobby

First off, coloring isn’t some frivolous, childish pastime. It’s a tool for reconnecting with your soul. It’s the bridge that links you to that part of you that still remembers how to play, how to dream, and how to express emotions without having to explain yourself.

I get it— we tell ourselves that we’re "too old" for this kind of fun. But here's the truth: You’re never too grown to color.

It’s a sacred moment where you give yourself permission to just be, without the pressure of outcomes. You don’t have to be perfect. There’s no judgment. Just you, your colors, and the freedom to create without limits.

The Power of Reconnecting with Your Inner Child

Think back to when you were a kid. What did you love doing? Maybe it was coloring, drawing, making things with your hands, or simply sitting in nature and imagining things that didn’t exist yet (I will raise my hand to all of those).  That was the unfiltered joy of your inner child. She was unburdened by the weight of the world. She was a dreamer, a creator, a maker of her own universe.

When was the last time you let yourself be her again?

That part of you is still there, waiting to be embraced. You’re not too old for the kind of fun that fills your cup and allows you to reconnect with your creativity. Coloring is the perfect way to unlock that joy.

Your inner child wants you to rest. To play. To let go and create without feeling like you’re "wasting time." And when you allow her to come forward, you open up the space for more joy, peace, and creative freedom in your life.

Reclaiming the Magic: How Coloring Heals the Inner Child

The beauty of coloring isn’t just the final product—it’s the process. As you fill in those spaces with color, you’re creating a safe place for your emotions. No words needed. Just pure expression through color and form.

When we color, we don’t need to explain why we feel the way we feel or rush to get through it. We allow ourselves to simply exist in that space. And through this process, we heal.

Here’s the truth: your inner child carries a wealth of untapped wisdom. When you allow yourself to embrace her through coloring, you unlock that wisdom and give yourself the gift of peace.

The Ritual of Reconnecting with Your Inner Child

Here’s how you can start honoring your inner child right now:

  • Create a Sacred Space – Find a quiet corner in your home where you can relax and be free of distractions. Grab your favorite coloring tools—markers, gel pens, pencils—and let yourself sink into the process.
  • Set an Intention – As you start coloring, take a moment to ask yourself: What do I need today? Is it calm? Is it joy? Is it healing? Let the colors guide you.
  • Let Go of Perfection – This isn’t about being “good” at coloring. It’s about allowing yourself to enjoy the moment and be present with the experience.
  • Embrace the Magic – Every stroke you make is a step closer to reconnecting with that part of you who still believes in magic. She’s still there. Let her speak through your art.
  • Honor Your Inner Child – Coloring doesn’t just heal your present self; it honors that little girl inside of you. Give her the space to express herself, without judgment.

Sis, let go of the idea that you’re too grown for play. You are worthy of the joy, peace, and creative expression that coloring brings. Your inner child needs you, and when you reconnect with her, you reclaim your magic.

So, grab your coloring book, take 10 minutes for yourself, and give your soul the love it deserves.
